Passan: Red Sox have the top-two trade chips in baseball, led by Bregman
ANAHEIM, CA (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels defeated the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Tuesday night thanks to two home runs from Christian Moore in the eighth inning and a two-run walk-off drive in the tenth.
Moore, the eighth overall choice in the 2024 draft and the top prospect for the Angels, hit a single homer off Greg Weissert in the eighth inning.
Moore finished his 11th major league game by hitting a slider from Justin Wilson (2-1) to right field after Marcelo Mayer’s leadoff RBI single off Reid Detmers (3-2) put Boston ahead in the 10th.
The Red Sox have dropped four in a row, and Garrett Crochet struck out 10 in seven spotless innings of three-hit ball. Three of Boston’s five hits came from Mayer.
After making a mistake on Romy Gonzalez’s leadoff grounder in the ninth inning, Angels shortstop Zach Neto departed the game with what appeared to be an injury, but Kenley Jansen got out of the jam.
The outcomes for Boston’s left-hander are predictable because Crochet leads the majors in strikeouts and the Angels lead the AL in strikeouts. For the first time in 12 outings since April 19, he did not give up a run, but he did issue three walks during his fourth double-digit strikeout performance of the season.
Nate Eaton’s fly to right in the third inning allowed Mayer to triple and score Boston’s first run.
The Angels were kept within striking distance by Tyler Anderson’s bullpen, who pitched into the fifth inning and gave up two hits.
Moore’s drive in the tenth inning, which just missed the line in right for his third career homer, changed the course of the game.
Boston was 40-41 during the halfway point of the regular season. It is only the fourth occasion in the last 27 complete seasons that the Red Sox have a losing record after 81 games.
When the Angels attempt to sweep the series on Wednesday, Yusei Kikuchi (2-6, 3.01 ERA) will be the pitcher. For Boston, Richard Fitts (0-3, 4.71 ERA) is the most likely starter.
