Former Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown in Massachusetts seeks to succeed Shaheen in New Hampshire

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Republican Scott Brown, a former U.S. Senate representative from Massachusetts, declared Wednesday that he would run again for the New Hampshire Senate seat that Democrat Jeanne Shaheen will be leaving open next year.

Born at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Brown, 65, relocated to Massachusetts when he was a young child. He won a special election in 2010 to fill the U.S. Senate seat that Edward Kennedy had occupied for decades after serving multiple terms in the state legislature.

In 2012, Democrat Elizabeth Warren defeated him. After that, he relocated to New Hampshire, where in 2014 he unsuccessfully ran against Shaheen for the Senate. In March, Shaheen, who is currently in her third term in the Senate, declared she would not run for reelection in 2026.

In addition, Brown briefly held the position of dean of New England Law in Boston and was the U.S. ambassador to New Zealand and Samoa during the first term of President Donald Trump.

He first told WMUR-TV that he was running.

In a campaign announcement video featuring the current and former Republican leaders, Brown stated, “We’ve been blessed by two great governors, Chris Sununu and Kelly Ayotte.” However, the appropriate individuals have not been representing us in Washington.

With 44-year-old Chris Pappas, a four-term congressman, declaring his intention to run for the Senate in April, New Hampshire has an all-Democrat congressional delegation.

In his video, Brown claimed that Pappas had supported Joe Biden during the border opening, price increases, and general unaffordability of living.

After Brown’s declaration, Pappas issued a statement in response.

He claimed that Brown supports efforts to deny health care coverage to tens of thousands of Granite Staters, aligns himself with corporate special interests, and supports President Trump’s reckless tariffs, which small businesses in New Hampshire are protesting against on a daily basis.

After Sununu decided not to run, Brown declared his intention to run. Last year, the well-liked governor made the decision not to run for a fifth, two-year term.
