Will Red Sox buy or sell at trade deadline? Craig Breslow responds

It looks like the Red Sox are already on the verge of a disastrous season that began with so much promise.

The Red Sox have now dropped five straight games and are 40-42 on the season after losing to the Angels on Wednesday afternoon.Boston’s chances of making the postseason are only 16.6%, per FanGraphs.

Craig Breslow, the Red Sox’s chief baseball officer, emphasized that Boston was not considering the transaction as a prelude to a more extensive roster purge in the midst of a disappointing season, even though they had traded away their best hitter, Rafael Devers, earlier this month.

Breslow stated earlier this month that this does not in any way indicate a white flag being raised for 2025. We are just as dedicated to fielding a successful team, contending for the division, and advancing far in the postseason as we were six months ago.

Despite the recent lackluster returns, Breslow emphasized once more during an appearance on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Thursday morning that Boston isn’t trying to further reduce its roster of talent.

Breslow stated, “We would be looking to improve our team.” For 2025, we would like to strengthen our team. Because we still have a chance to earn a Wild Card even if we haven’t been able to put together the steady performance we believe we are capable of.

Additionally, no one has truly fled with the AL East. We believe we have a decent chance of making a long postseason run as we begin to get healthier and start looking beyond the squad for methods to improve.

Boston might salvage a lost season by offloading additional important players before the July 31 trade deadline, even though Breslow is focused on the Red Sox adding before the deadline.

On Tuesday, ESPN released a list of baseball’s best trade chips, and Alex Bregman and Jarren Duran came in first and second, respectively. On the same ranking, struggling starter Walker Buehler was ranked No. 28 overall, while closer Aroldis Chapman was placed No. 18.
