Alex Cora commented on the Red Sox’s difficulties: The Red Sox were poised to complete a quick three-game sweep of the Reds at Fenway Park later in the evening after picking up where they left off in their weather-suspended game on Wednesday, winning 5-3.
However, Boston quickly wasted the opportunity after taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the sixth, in part because of base-running errors and defensive blunders. The game concluded in a disheartening 8-4 loss to Cincinnati, which meant that the home game run finished in a 3-3 draw rather than a 4-2.
Alex Cora, the manager of the Red Sox, explained the loss after the game by pointing out that his team is currently 43-45, six games behind the Blue Jays and Yankees, and tied for first place in the A.L. East.
“There have been many that have gotten away from us if you look back at the season,” Cora told reporters. To be honest, that is the reason we are in our current situation.
At times, the phrase “slipped through our hands” was a direct allusion to the defensive battles. Christian Encarnacion-Strand eventually hit a grand slam to give the Reds the lead after third baseman Abraham Toro made a fielding error in the top of the seventh inning.
First baseman Romy Gonzalez, who was representing what would have been the tying run, ran into an out at third base in the bottom of the same inning. In the eighth inning, there were further defensive errors, including an odd play in which three Red Sox infielders threw the ball but were not out (two runs were scored).
The team’s underwhelming performance over the course of the season has been typified by this kind of disappointing moment that yielded no results. Even though they were viewed as possible division favorites before the season began, Cora’s team ended up in fourth place.
We expect to win those games, he said of the loss, after taking a three-run lead in the seventh.
Schedules and scores:
After Tuesday’s game was suspended due to a thunderstorm, the Red Sox won their resumption against the Reds on Wednesday 5-3. However, they lost their regularly scheduled night game versus Cincinnati 8-4.
At 11:05 a.m. tomorrow, the Red Sox will travel to start a three-game series against the Nationals.
