The Roche Bros. plaza was left empty after The Paper Store’s West Roxbury location shuttered on Wednesday.
The Paper Store claims that it was unable to reach a consensus with the landlord to extend the lease at this site.
According to a statement from the company’s president and CEO, Tom Anderson, “We are constantly evaluating our stores based on the lease with the landlord, plaza and store traffic, and proximity to other Paper Stores in the area, among other factors.”
Since they already have locations in Quincy at 51 Newport Ave. and Dedham at 320 Legacy Place, the company has no intentions to open a new store here.
The Anderson family still owns and operates the business, which began as a little newspaper stand in Maynard in 1964. Since then, it has developed into a family-run specialty store that offers a variety of goods, including apparel, jewelry, and stationery.
Last year, in honor of its 60th anniversary, The Paper Store revealed a $60 million expansion plan to update its sites around the Northeast over the following five years.
The company has already opened or renovated seven locations this year, with plans to open seven more later this year. In 2024, the company opened or renovated nine stores within its portfolio.
Among the openings is the Hudson store’s relocation to a larger space and a new plaza while remaining in the neighborhood. One of the biggest stores in the company’s portfolio will open its new flagship location in Attleboro in the middle of August.
A 2024 announcement states that The Paper Store employs more than 3,000 people and has more than 100 outlets around the country.
According to Anderson, our goals for growth over the coming years reflect our resolve to reinvest in our community with the same fervor and commitment that have characterized our family-run company for many years.
