Aberdeen, South Dakota — Until 10 p.m. Central Daylight Time, a winter storm is likely to continue to cause traffic disruptions in South Dakota and Minnesota. The storm is forecast to bring up to seven inches of snow and dangerous conditions. The Winter Storm Warnings have been issued by the National Weather Service for a number of counties, advising travelers to expect challenging travel conditions through Wednesday.
The forecast is for heavy snow and ice accumulations, with some regions, including parts of Aberdeen, Sisseton, and Watertown, expecting as much as seven inches of snow. Snow that is blowing around and visibility that is decreased as a result of winds gusting up to forty miles per hour will make driving extremely dangerous. The accumulation of ice on roadways and overpasses may result in hazardous situations, particularly for commuters who are traveling in the evening and morning.
It is probable that travel may be extremely difficult, particularly in the central and northeastern parts of South Dakota as well as in western Minnesota. A number of locations, including Milbank, Britton, and Ortonville, are being affected by the storm.
Drivers are strongly encouraged by the National Weather Service to postpone travel that is not absolutely necessary and to be ready for roads that are slick. Emergency supplies, such as a flashlight, food, and water, should be carried by drivers in the event that they are required to travel. Additionally, drivers should check the road conditions at 511mn.org or by phoning 511.
