With the tech billionaire threatening to start a new political party and Trump implying Musk might face consequences for his opposition, Elon Musk’s conflict with President Donald Trump and apparently any congressional Republicans who back the president’s massive tax cuts and spending package has resurfaced.
In addition to exposing the divide between the Republican president and one of his most vocal former supporters, the controversy has rekindled the prospect that the richest man in the world, accompanied by his billions, may once again participate in political spending.
The most recent developments in the Musk-Trump disagreement are as follows:
Musk reenters the political fray
Musk, who was the primary donor to America PAC and spent at least $250 million backing Trump during the 2024 presidential race, stated in May that he would probably spend far less on politics going forward. However, it appears from his recent remarks that Musk may be reconsidering that position.
The former head of the Department of Government Efficiency and tech billionaire repeatedly attacked Republicans on Monday for supporting Trump’s tax cut bill, calling the GOP the PORKY PIG PARTY! for putting in a clause that would increase the national debt ceiling by $5 trillion. He also called the bill political suicide for Republicans.
Following a post in which former Michigan Representative Justin Amash requested Musk’s help for Rep. Thomas Massie, Musk replied, “I will,” promising to work toward backing primary candidates for members of Congress who supported the bill. A new super PAC dedicated to attacking the Kentucky Republican who voted against the proposal has already been established by Trump and his advisors.
Early on Tuesday, Musk respondedYou’re fantastic in response to a Massie X post that circulated press reports about Musk’s backing of him.
Musk s back and forth with Trump
A month ago, Musk and Trump’s powerful political partnership appeared to come to a spectacular end after a tirade in which Musk demanded that Trump be impeached and Trump threatened to pursue Musk’s commercial interests.
Musk’s criticism of the spending and tax reduction measure, which he has described as a repulsive abomination, has dominated most of it. The Biden-era green energy tax benefits for electric vehicles and related technology would be drastically reduced in both the House and Senate versions.
Musk is the CEO of SpaceX, which has significant defense contracts, and Tesla, the biggest electric car maker in the country.
Trump claimed on social media overnight that Musk has long been aware of his opposition to the EV Mandate, calling it absurd. Trump said that without subsidies, the CEO of Tesla would most likely have to shut down and return to South Africa, and he proposed that maybe DOGE should take a serious look at this. A LOT OF MONEY WILL BE SAVED!
When a reporter asked Trump at the White House on Tuesday if he would think about deporting Musk, he went one step further.
Trump claimed that we might have to place DOGE on Elon Musk, the government-affiliated company that Musk had previously run for, ripping through governmental agencies in a widespread, cost-cutting campaign. You are aware of DOGE. The monster that could have to return and devour Elon is DOGE.
A new political party?
Musk has repeatedly stated that a new political party is required in order to represent the opinions that he believes the GOP does not represent.
Musk asked whether the United States needed a political party that truly represents the 80% in the middle in a poll he posted on his X feed early last month. Musk shared the survey’s results overnight on Monday, revealing that over 80% of the more than 5 million votes cast were in support of a new party.
Musk stated Monday afternoon that the United States needs an alternative to the Democrat-Republican uniparty so that the people truly have a voice and that the America Party would be established if this crazy spending measure passes.
