Back Door Donuts in Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard came in at number five in the publication’s selection of the top ten doughnut shops in America, which was published on Wednesday as part of its 2025 10Best Readers Choice Awards.
According to USA Today, these ten doughnut shops around the country provide a distinct charm and individualized touch that big chains frequently can’t match.
The following is what the magazine said about Back Door Donuts:
The history of this donut store in Martha’s Vineyard dates back to the late 1940s, and although it has undergone several changes, it has been serving hot donuts from the bakery’s rear door at all hours since 1971. Apple fritters, raspberry jelly donuts, and a range of other fried donuts are the specialty of Back Door Donuts. Although you can still wait in line at the rear door on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings, the Martha’s Vineyard facility is open from Friday through Sunday from morning until early afternoon.

E. Lockhart, a New York Times best-selling author who writes about island companies and spends summers on Martha’s Vineyard, told Boston.com that Back Door Donuts is one of her favorite places.
Since the company built a pop-up at Loretta’s Last Call on Lansdowne Street in Boston in 2023, travelers no longer need to take a ferry to enjoy the delicious delicacies.
Donald’s Donuts in Zanesville, Ohio, is ranked as the top doughnut shop by USA Today.
Twenty nominees are chosen by USA Today travel experts for the 10Best Readers Choice Awards lists, including everything from cuisine to accommodations, places to visit to activities. To decide the top 10, the journal then asks readers to vote.
