Sioux Falls, South Dakota — High winds and low humidity are creating conditions that are conducive to the development of hazardous fire conditions today, which has resulted in the issuance of fire weather advisories for numerous places across South Dakota.
During the period of time beginning at noon MDT (1 PM CDT) and ending at 7 PM MDT (8 PM CDT), the National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for a significant portion of South Dakota. Temperatures that reach the 60s and relative humidity levels that drop to as low as 15 percent are likely to create weather conditions that are extremely hazardous for fire situations. The gusty winds coming from the northwest will reach speeds of 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts reaching up to 40 miles per hour. This alert covers a number of fire zones across the state, including those in the counties of Perkins, Ziebach, and Haakon, as well as the counties that are nearby.
The south-central region of the state, which includes Gregory, Jerauld, and Brule, as well as several smaller municipalities, was the subject of a second warning. With gusts of wind reaching up to 35 miles per hour and humidity falling to 18 percent, this warning will be in effect today from 1 PM until 8 PM Central Daylight Time.
Considering that any fire that starts outside would spread quickly, the authorities are warning against burning anything outside. Those who live in the areas that have been impacted are strongly encouraged to be cautious and to take preventative steps in order to avert wildfires.
