COLORADO — Coloradans hitting the road for Independence Day celebrations this year will find some welcome relief at the pump, with gas prices at their lowest summer levels since 2021.
According to AAA Colorado’s latest report on Monday, the average price for regular unleaded gas in the state sits at $3.12 per gallon — a few cents below the national average of $3.19.
Prices for other fuel types in Colorado are as follows:
- Mid-grade: $3.51
- Premium: $3.83
- Diesel: $3.40
Compared to this time last year, prices are down by more than 20 cents. While rates remain slightly higher than during the Christmas season, they still mark a notable decline for summer travel.
The drop in prices comes as AAA projects a record number of Americans will be on the move this Independence Day holiday period, which runs from June 28 to July 6. An estimated 72.2 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home — 1.7 million more than last year and 7 million more than in 2019.
“Following Memorial Day’s record forecast, AAA is seeing strong demand for road trips and air travel over Independence Day week,” said Stacey Barber, vice president of AAA Travel. “With the holiday falling on a Friday, travelers have the option of making it a long weekend or taking the entire week to make memories with family and friends.”
Gas prices in Colorado vary significantly by county. Pitkin County tops the charts with the highest average at $4.65 per gallon, while Fremont County offers the state’s lowest at $2.81 per gallon — a difference of $1.84.
On a national scale, California continues to report the most expensive gas at $4.59 per gallon, while Mississippi drivers enjoy the cheapest prices at $2.72 per gallon, according to AAA.
