With the Original Six team expanding their pool of prospects in the NHL Draft and re-upping in-house skaters like Morgan Geekie, Henri Jokiharju, and Mason Lohrei, Don Sweeney and the Bruins have already had a busy offseason.
However, with NHL free agency about to begin, the Bruins will have a chance to expand their roster on Tuesday, as Boston still has an estimated $12.7 million in cap space.
There might be some value found in the free-agent market even if a number of prominent targets have already re-signed with their respective clubs before July 1. Sweeney also emphasized that Boston could reevaluate trade possibilities once things start to get up steam this summer.
On Saturday, Sweeney stated, “We looked at a couple of those things.” Perhaps they also come to bear during the course of the following day or so. And if we haven’t filled those voids through trade, we’ll enter free agency. As a result, you won’t be able to tell which players are leaving their existing settings.
Up until the start of the free agency period, some guys sign today, tomorrow, and the day after. In the end, you attempt to predict which players would be available and which ones would be departing their existing situations.
Come along with us as we discuss every stage of the NHL free agency process, which officially starts at 12 p.m.
Regular updates will be provided, along with scouting reports on the player Boston choose to bring in on Tuesday.
LIVE COVERAGE
12:35: One of the most desirable free agents is no longer available.
For Boeser in VAN, 7.25 x 7.
12:30: Additional Arvidsson updates.
12:22: With Blumel, a young winger, it appears the Bruins are counting on some upside. With 39 goals in 67 games with the Texas Stars last season, the 25-year-old Czech forward led the AHL.
We’ll see what the Bruins can get out of him as he has only scored two goals in his 14 NHL appearances.
Boston is expected to sign Mat J. Mel.
12:00: Officially, free agency has begun.
11:50: The Bruins have just under $9 million in cap room after accepting Arvidsson’s contract.
Viktor Arvidsson was acquired by the Bruins from the Edmonton Oilers.Cap Projectionpic.twitter.com/N99gpFOqHB has been updated.
11:33 Friedman claims that Arvidsson will be selected in the fifth round of the 2027 draft.
Trade information, according to sources:To: Viktor Arvidsson, #NHLBruinsTo#Oilers: 5th Round Pick in 2027Arvidsson’s pay was not kept.
11:28: It appears that Arvidsson is currently only receiving draft capital.
Viktor Arvidsson, who waived his no-trade, is heading to Boston for a future/mid-round draft pick, although the league trade call is still waiting.
11:20: With a $4 million cap charge, Arvidsson, 32, has one year remaining on his contract. Although he has five seasons with 20 goals on his CV, he only scored 15 goals and 27 points with Edmonton last season.
On a rather light Boston forward grouping, he may now be more of a third-line winger, though that is still up in the air.
Arvidsson: The Bruins are in dire need of a forward grouping with plenty of pass-first options, and he is dangerous on the rush and also peppers the net. This link: https://t.co/jA8G53ZA9Q
11:15: Interesting. One has to wonder if Korpisalo would be a target here, considering how desperate the Oilers are for goaltending.
I have learned that Viktor Arvidsson was dealt from Edmonton to the Boston Bruins.
10:51: For many teams, including the Bruins, offer papers constitute a fascinating offseason strategy. However, it appears that several organizations are ready to match any offer made to them because so many clubs still have plenty of cap room.
10:02: It’s safe to state that the current pool of free agents is lacking. There aren’t many high-end choices available outside of Brock Boeser and Nikolaj Ehlers, especially since Mitch Marner signed a sign-and-trade to Vegas and other players like Brad Marchand, Aaron Ekblad, Sam Bennett, and others have re-signed.
This is really depressing, haha (via @DailyFaceoff).Good luck with your free agency, though!
The Bruins may need to make a deal if they want an impact player.
9:30: From Warrior, greetings! There is a lot going on today, beginning with Development Camp Day 2. Last night, we released our first Dev Campnotebook, which focused on Vashek Blanar and Will Zellers.
