Boston (AP) After a rain-shortened game the night before, the Boston Red Sox defeated the Cincinnati Reds 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon thanks to a tie-breaking RBI single by Wilyer Abreu in the eighth inning.
Following a six-game losing streak—the longest since September 2022—Boston won its third straight game thanks to an RBI double from Trevor Story following Abreu’s hit.
For the Reds, who have lost three of four games, Spencer Steer hit a two-run homer.
Aroldis Chapman recorded the final three outs for his 15th save, the 350th of his career, while Brayan Bello (4-3) pitched five innings in relief.
Play resumed at 2:32 p.m. with only a few thousand of the 32,355 paid spectators in Fenway Park present, and Steer, the National League’s player of the week, made it 3-2 in the fourth inning with a 0-1 cutter from Bello into the Green Monster seats.
Abreu became just the sixth player in big league history to hit a grand slam and inside-the-park homer in the same game on Monday, helping the Red Sox win the first game of the three-game series. On August 3, 1958, Roger Maris was the last.
The game on Tuesday was interrupted after three innings and was postponed for one hour and twenty minutes. This season, it was the Reds’ second game with a suspension.
The game only lasted two hours and nine minutes in total.
Abreu singled to right against Lyon Richardson (0–3) with pinch runner Nate Eaton on third and two outs. The center field wall was then doubled off by Story.
This season, the Red Sox are just one victory away from returning to.500 (43–44).
The normally scheduled nightcap is expected to be pitched by Reds RHP Nick Martinez (5-8, 4.12 ERA). Alex Cora, the manager of the Red Sox, had not yet named a starter.
