In his second major league start, Boston took out Cincinnati’s sensational right-hander Chase Burns with a seven-run first inning.
The Red Sox won for the second time in nine games after Jarren Duran scored a solo drive deep in the sixth.
The Reds had won five of seven and Austin Hays hit a single homer and a two-run triple.
Burns (0–1), 22, was chosen second overall in the amateur draft in July, although he only managed one out and seven runs with five earned. He struck out the first five hitters he faced in his debut last week, making him the only starting pitcher to do so since the expansion era.
Before the Reds scored three runs in the fourth, Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet (8-4) retired the first ten batters he faced. In six innings, he struck out nine batters while giving up five runs, four of which were earned.
For the fourth time in 18 starts this season, Crochet gave up more than two runs.
A fly ball that Abreu drove into the triangle in center field struck the top of a side wall on Boston’s bullpen before veering leftward along the track. Abreu sprinted around and slid headfirst into the plate without throwing.
Abreu became the second Red Sox player since 1939 and the sixth player in major league history to smash both an inside-the-park homer and a grand slam in the same game. The Boston player’s inside-the-park home run was the first since Jacoby Ellsbury’s on September 19, 2011, at Fenway Park.
In the middle game of the interleague series, Red Sox RHP Richard Fitts (0-3, 4.68) will take on Reds RHP Brady Singer (7-6, 4.31 ERA) on Tuesday.
