Although they cannot be formally signed until July 6, the team will be allowed to negotiate and agree to terms with free agents starting at 6 p.m.
However, the Celtics are still around $4 million short of the second luxury tax apron as of Sunday, so the opening of free agency does not necessarily imply the team will be able to spend a lot of money. This implies that they will have to sign players to the veteran’s minimum or begin re-signing their own free agents on Monday night.
The Celtics have so far avoided paying millions in luxury tax by trading starters Kristaps Porzingisto and Julius Holiday, shredding their salaries.
