Tragedy on Highway 50: Bay Area Woman and Nevada Man Killed in Thanksgiving Crash. Highway 50 near Echo Summit was closed for hours on Thanksgiving night due to a head-on collision in the Sierra that claimed the lives of two persons, including a woman from the Bay Area.

Just after 5:30 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers reported that a Chevrolet Traverse SUV traveling east and a Toyota sport utility vehicle traveling west crashed just west of Johnson Pass. The collision occurred roughly two miles west of Echo Summit. On Friday, investigators were still trying to figure out what caused the deadly collision.

According to CHP officials, the 50-year-old Fremont lady was a passenger in a Toyota sport utility vehicle heading west on Highway 50. A 26-year-old guy and two women, ages 64 and 60, were among the three other passengers in the SUV who were moderately injured in the collision. CHP officials determined that the driver of the SUV, a 28-year-old man from Kirkland, Washington, was seriously hurt in the collision.

The incident also claimed the life of the second vehicle’s driver, an 84-year-old man from Wellington, Nevada. Until family members were notified, their names were being kept confidential.

Before 10:30 p.m., Caltrans and the CHP reopened the El Dorado County route.
