COLUMBIA, SC — As required by the new Constitutional Carry law, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division has started a free program to teach people how to get a concealed weapons permit.
Because of this new law, every county has to give two free CWP courses every month.
SLED has teamed up with certified teachers and some law enforcement groups to offer these classes to people in South Carolina for free. People who want to take part must either have a driver’s license or own land in South Carolina. For the shooting part of the class, people must bring a handgun and 25 rounds of ammunition. However, they can make plans to rent a handgun from the teacher.
People aged 18 and up can join the program, and they don’t have to go to the county where they live to do so. The free classes don’t replace the paid classes; they just offer the same CWP training for free.
The people who sign up will get at least four hours of training on basic gun safety, terminology, self-defense laws, and the rules for properly carrying a gun in South Carolina. At the end of the course, there is a 50-question multiple-choice test and a 25-round qualifying course. To pass both, you must get at least a 70% score.
