SANTA ANA, Calif. – A 69-year-old woman tragically died Wednesday morning after being struck by a trash truck while crossing the street in Santa Ana, authorities reported. The fatal incident occurred at approximately 7:56 a.m. on Nov. 19 in the 600 block of S. Shelton Street, near the intersection with Bishop Street.
Details of the Accident
According to the Santa Ana Police Department (SAPD), multiple calls were received reporting a traffic collision in the residential area of Shelton and Bishop Streets. Officers, along with the Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA), responded to the scene and discovered that a trash truck had collided with a pedestrian.
The victim was identified as Maria Rubalcava de Ruesga, a longtime resident of Santa Ana. Emergency responders pronounced her deceased at the scene.

Preliminary reports indicate that the trash truck was traveling eastbound on Bishop Street when it made a right turn onto southbound Shelton Street at a roundabout. It was at that moment the vehicle struck Rubalcava as she was crossing the street. Authorities confirmed that the truck driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Neighbors told Fox 11 that the intersection is considered dangerous, and they have requested the city install stop signs to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Residents described Rubalcava as a beloved local who was on her way to the grocery store when the accident occurred.
