San Francisco, California — San Francisco is preparing for a rare and historic July 4, 2026 celebration, with a fireworks show planned directly from the Golden Gate Bridge. The city’s official event page says the free public display will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m., making it the city’s only official fireworks show for Independence Day.
What to Expect on July 4
The Golden Gate Bridge District says the fireworks will be launched from the towers of the bridge, and that this will be only the third time fireworks have been fired from the iconic span. The display is being tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary and is expected to be visible across San Francisco and the Bay Area.
The San Francisco Port also says the fireworks show will begin at 9:30 p.m. and last about 20 minutes, with the waterfront lit up for the holiday night.
Best Places to Watch the Fireworks
For the clearest views, the Golden Gate Bridge District recommends Crissy Field, Marina Green, and Pier 39 / Northern Embarcadero. These locations offer strong sightlines toward the bridge, which is where the fireworks will launch.
The Fisherman’s Wharf official event page also says the fireworks are best viewed from the Fisherman’s Wharf area, including Pier 39 and the Fisherman’s Wharf Promenade. It notes that fireworks will launch from two barges on the Bay, one near PIER 39 and another near Aquatic Park.
Street Closures and Access Changes
Because this is expected to draw large crowds, the city and bridge district are putting major restrictions in place. The Golden Gate Bridge will be fully closed to all vehicular traffic shortly before the fireworks begin, and the east sidewalk will be partially closed ahead of the event. The district also says parking lots at the south end of the bridge will be closed for much of the day on July 4.

Around Fisherman’s Wharf, the Port says traffic is expected to be heavy and public transportation is highly recommended. It also lists closures for areas such as Pier 7, Pier 14, Pier 27 parking lot, Pier 45, and Little Embarcadero, along with a closure on Jefferson Street between Hyde and Powell streets starting in the afternoon.
How to Plan Your Visit
If you are heading to the waterfront, plan to arrive early. Fisherman’s Wharf says musical entertainment will run from 2 p.m. to 9:15 p.m., with the fireworks following later in the evening. The Wharf’s official guide also advises visitors to dress in layers, since waterfront weather can get cold, windy, and foggy after sunset.
The Port recommends using Muni, BART, or San Francisco Bay Ferry for updates and real-time schedule information, since traffic and parking will be limited.
A Big Night for San Francisco
San Francisco’s July 4 celebration is shaping up to be one of the most memorable in years, with a rare fireworks show from one of the world’s most famous bridges. Between the Golden Gate Bridge launch, the crowded waterfront, and the citywide holiday energy, July 4, 2026 is expected to be a major draw for locals and visitors alike.
