The Red Sox may still have a chance to strengthen the position even though they did not add a first baseman to their roster during the trade deadline.
Nathaniel Lowe, a veteran and previous Gold Glover, was designated for assignment this week. The Nationals decided to unconditionally release him, making him a potential free agency.
He will soon have the freedom to sign for the rest of 2025 wherever he chooses. According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Boston is anticipated to be in the running to sign him.
Lowe would receive an enticing offer from the Red Sox. They may offer some reassurance that Lowe would be a reasonably reliable starting at first base and are a possible postseason contender.
Lowe may need to consider a platoon position, playing regularly against righties and sitting against southpaws, considering Romy Gonzalez’s utter dominance against lefties this season (.354 batting average against them).
It remains to be seen if such a circumstance will deter Lowe from signing with Boston, but the team he chooses to sign with won’t be determined by financial considerations. The Nationals will still be responsible for the remainder of his 2025 contract because they are letting him go. Therefore, before Lowe has genuine free agency in the offseason, any team interested will have the unique chance to add a previous Gold Glover for effectively a two-month rental.

Abraham Toro, the Red Sox’s main first baseman this season, has done fairly well given that he only became a reliable starter following Triston Casas’ injury early in the season. First base has been one of Boston’s weaker positions, though.
It seems logical that the Red Sox would still be interested in Lowe now that they might acquire him at a discount, considering that he was on their radar earlier this season.
Despite just hitting.215 in 2025, Lowe has had an amazing year. Except for the shortened 2020 season, he has never ended a full season hitting below.262. In 2022, he achieved a career-high hitting average of.302, earning him a Silver Slugger award. Only two years have passed since his Gold Glove season the following year.
Lowe has a high ceiling and, if the Red Sox can entice him to Boston for a stretch run, he might be a huge asset, regardless of his poor season.
