Boston (AP) George Springer had three hits and two RBI singles, Jos Berros pitched seven scoreless innings, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Boston Red Sox 9-0 on Friday night.
Toronto, which has defeated its AL East opponents six times this season, also had runs scored by Bo Bichette, Alejandro Kirk, Ernie Clement, and Andrs Gim nez. Two more hits were contributed by Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Berr os (4-3) gave up just four hits, eight strikeouts, and one walk while delivering Boston its sixth consecutive defeat.
Over six innings, Boston’s Brayan Bello (3-3) allowed three runs off of eight hits while striking out. However, a Red Sox lineup that has only scored four runs in their last three games did not help him. For the fifteenth game this season, Boston was kept to one run or none.
Over the past nine games, all of which have been Red Sox losses, Boston opponents have scored eight runs or more four times.
The Blue Jays added Guerrero Jr. to their lineup late. A pitch struck his right forearm, causing him to leave their series finale victory against Cleveland on Thursday. Although manager John Schneider had intended to be conservative and start Clement at first base, X-rays did not show a fracture.
In the first inning, Springer hit a single to center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela with runners on first and second and two outs. Rafaela threw home to catcher Connor Wong, and Guerrero Jr., on second, attempted to score but was called out. When Toronto contested, the call was overturned because the review revealed that Wong had missed the tag.
Boston has not lost six straight games since September 26, 2022.
On Saturday, RHP Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.61 ERA) will start for the Blue Jays for the 17th time this season. RHP Lucas Giolito (3-1, 4.53) is expected to start for the Red Sox for the eleventh time.
