Red Sox fall to Giants 9-5 as Heliot Ramos drives in four runs

AP’s San Francisco After a two-run single earlier in the game, Heliot Ramos doubled home two runs to highlight San Francisco’s pivotal seventh inning, as the Giants recovered to defeat the Boston Red Sox 9–5 on Sunday.

Against Red Sox starter Luis Giolito, Casey Schmitt and Mike Yastrzemski each hit a single home run in the fifth inning, and Willy Adames followed in the eighth.

Red Sox second baseman Romy Gonz lez missed a routine catch on Yastrzemski’s liner off Justin Wilson, and San Francisco took the lead after Tyler Fitzgerald bunted home the tying run to chase reliever Greg Weissert (2-2), with Adames and Schmitt each aboard on hits to begin the eighth.

The Giants crossed the fences twice in the bottom half to level the game at four after Rob Refsnyder blasted a two-run homer in the fifth and Gonz Lez homered one out later for the Red Sox.

The Red Sox’s Ceddanne Rafaela hit a home run in the sixth inning.

Ramos delivered with the single in the third after the Red Sox took the lead in the first on a fielding error in left field.

Over three hours prior to the first pitch, thousands of supporters from the 40,350-seat sold-out crowd waited in line to acquire a Jung Hoo Lee giveaway jersey.

Robbie Ray, a southpaw for the Giants, gave up three earned runs and eight hits in five innings while striking out seven and walking one. The victory came off a seventh-inning pitch from Erik Miller (4-0).

After arguing a tag call at second base that had been upheld on replay review, Jarren Duran and Red Sox manager Alex Cora were ejected in the eighth inning. Yastrzemski threw to shortstop Adames, and Duran doubled to right and was out at second.

As the outfielder approached the dugout, second base umpire Doug Eddings threw Duran, who was clearly cursing. Then, after turning around, he attempted to approach Eddings but was stopped. Cora was also expelled after rushing outside to argue.

On home days, the Giants improved to a majors-best 15-2 record. This season, they have blasted 44 home runs in afternoon games.

Boston’s RHP Walker Buehler (5-5, 5.95 ERA) will start the series opener against the Angels in Anaheim on Monday. Before RHP Justin Verlander (0-4, 4.45) attempts to win his first game on Tuesday, the Giants get Monday off.
