BISMARCK, N.D. – A lot of people may find that their asthma gets worse when it gets colder.
Dr. Danilo Dalan, an allergy and immunologist at Essentia Health, said that cold weather can make people’s lungs worse if they already have health problems. Still, there are some things you can do to better handle your problems as the weather gets cooler.
Because most of us spend so much time inside, he said cleaning your house often can help. There are also things you can do to help ease your feelings if you do decide to go outside.
If you know you’re going to do something—like sledding or going outside—and you have asthma and all of these medicines, Dr. Dalan said, “Make sure you take them a few minutes before you go to add an extra layer of protection.”
He said having pets inside can make conditions worse. He also recommended getting new pillowcases more often and making sure you have all of your shots up to date.
