North Miami Beach, Florida — On the Joseph Lawrence White, 32 years old, is being charged with hate crimes after reportedly stabbing a transgender woman during a violent confrontation at her house in North Miami Beach, according to the authorities. White is facing charges related to the acts of violence.
In connection with the incident that occurred on February 10, White was taken into custody on Wednesday and is currently facing charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault with the purpose to commit a felony, and battery with prejudice.
The victim, who is currently dating White’s brother, has been well acquainted with White for a number of years, as stated by the authorities. It has been alleged that their relationship has been tense, with conflicts originating from the victim’s sexual orientation.
The event took place when White, his brother, and their mother went back to the apartment of the victim, which was located on the 2100 block of Northeast 167th Street, in order to recover a speaker. They were unable to find it, which led to a dispute that escalated verbally about it.
It is stated that White insulted the victim by using a slur, and the victim responded to White’s insult in kind. This exchange, according to the police, is what prompted White to punch the victim in the face. White is said to have wrestled the skillet away from her and then stabbed her in the chest with a pair of scissors after she had grabbed it in an attempt to defend herself to White.
The woman allegedly attempted to defend herself by using a broom, which prompted White to throw a candle at her before fleeing the scene of the incident, according to the legal authorities. The victim attempted to chase White despite the fact that she was injured, but she eventually passed out due to the loss of blood. After that, she was sent to HCA Florida Aventura Hospital for medical treatment.
The next day, White was taken into custody by the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office in connection with a separate investigation. After that, he was moved to the headquarters of the North Miami Beach Police Department, where he continued to refuse to comply with the ongoing investigation.
According to the data kept by the custody facility, White is now being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Centre without the possibility of bond.
The dangers that members of the LGBTQ+ community confront are brought to light by this case, which is why advocates and law enforcement are keeping a close eye on it. The necessity of tackling hate crimes and ensuring that victims of violence receive justice is emphasised by authorities from the local government.
