Karen Read signs deal for screen adaptation of sensational murder case

Following her acquittal on murder and manslaughter charges, Karen Readis is currently working on a screenplay rendition of her narrative to be filmed.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Read and her lead lawyer, Alan Jackson, are working with LBI Productions to develop the film, which promises case information that have not yet been made public.

Julie Yorn, the head of production at LBI, told the news site in a statement that this is more than just a legal thriller. It’s about what happens when one voice doesn’t want to be heard.

Less than two weeks had passed since Read, 45, was found not guilty of the January 2022 murder of her partner, Boston Police Officer John O. Keefe, when the agreement was announced. Jurors ultimately found Read not guilty of second-degree murder, manslaughter while operating under the influence, and fleeing the scene of a deadly collision, despite prosecutors’ claims that she struck O Keefe with her SUV in a drunken frenzy while dropping him off at a Canton home.

The jury ultimately found Read guilty solely of drunk driving, a charge for which she was placed on probation for a year. In 2024, Read’s first trial ended in a mistrial.

O Keefe was attacked and killed after attending an afterparty at 34 Fairview Road, according to a different hypothesis put forth by Read’s attorneys, who have long claimed she was set up in a police enforcement cover-up. They have claimed that Read was the victim of a poorly conducted and biased inquiry meant to shield the homeowner’s friends and family—another Boston police officer.

Investigation Discovery, NBC’s Dateline, ABC’s 20/20, and other docuseries and specials will be joined by the forthcoming LBI initiative. One of Read’s most outspoken supporters, Turtleboy blogger Aidan Kearney, has inked a deal with Compelling Pictures for a film about the case, and Netflix is also developing a three-part documentary on the issue.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Read and Jackson are involved in a literary agent’s shopping for publishing rights for a book idea.
