Heat Advisory and Severe Weather Threat Issued for Southeast Michigan

Southeast Michigan is bracing for an intense combination of heat, humidity, and the potential for strong thunderstorms on Thursday, prompting a 4Warn Weather Alert and a Heat Advisory for the region.

Heat Advisory in Effect

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for all of Southeast Michigan, in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday.

  • Heat index values have reached or exceeded 100°F in many areas.
  • Some locations could see “feels-like” temperatures as high as 105°F.
  • High temperatures in the mid-90s will persist through the afternoon and evening.
  • Evening temperatures will only dip into the 80s and lower 90s, offering little overnight relief.

Health officials warn that the extreme heat poses a serious risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable groups.

Groups at higher risk include:

  • Young children
  • Older adults
  • Pregnant individuals
  • Outdoor workers
  • People with chronic medical conditions

Safety Recommendations

To reduce the risk of heat exhaustion or heatstroke:

  • Stay hydrated with plenty of water.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
  • Take frequent breaks if outside.
  • Avoid strenuous activities during peak heat hours.
  • Check on friends, family, and neighbors, especially the elderly.

Thunderstorm Risk Later in the Day

In addition to the heat, weather conditions may support the development of isolated thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon and evening hours.

  • Thunderstorms may become strong to severe before midnight.
  • A level 1 of 5 risk for severe thunderstorms has been issued for the area.
  • Main threats include:
    • Heavy rainfall, which may cause localized street flooding
    • Gusty winds of up to 60 mph
  • Storms will move east at 25–35 mph.

Residents are advised to stay weather-aware, especially during the evening hours, and to have multiple ways to receive alerts.
