Governor Maura Healey’s office has sharply criticized the cancellation of over $45 million in federal funding aimed at accelerating land conservation efforts across Massachusetts.
This includes a vital $20 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture that would have supported the protection of farmlands, forests, and wetlands, ensuring long-term environmental sustainability.
Governor Healey condemned the move, saying, “President Trump is yet again taking action that will hurt Massachusetts’ rural communities, farmers, and economy. This funding would have ensured clean water, provided access to fresh local food, and supported our agricultural economy. President Trump is making us less healthy and weakening our economy. He should reverse these cuts immediately.”
In addition to the $20 million agricultural funding loss, the Trump administration also canceled a $25 million grant to Mass Audubon, which was set to protect more than 10,000 acres of forests and wetlands along the Connecticut River.

These cuts have raised concerns across Massachusetts about the long-term environmental impact and the economic strain on local communities, farmers, and conservation groups. Governor Healey has urged federal officials to reinstate the funding to safeguard the state’s natural resources and agricultural economy.
