Fort Worth names new director for economic development

The new director of Fort Worth’s economic development department will be the former deputy city manager for Tomball, authorities said Monday. On September 15, she starts her new position.

Jessica Rogers, who has been Tomball’s assistant city manager since 2021, served as the city of Denton’s director of economic development from 2019 to 2021.

Rogers takes over for Robert Sturns, who departed the city in March to take a position as Tarrant County’s executive director of Workforce Solutions. Since 2016, Sturns has served as the director of economic development.

According to a city news release, Rogers brings a wealth of experience in promoting corporate expansion, drawing in new investment, and boosting community vibrancy.

According to city manager Jay Chapa, Jessica is the best person to assist Fort Worth in achieving its lofty objectives because of her demonstrated leadership and track record in economic development. We are eager to observe how she will contribute to the expansion of our economy and the uplift of our community.

Rogers will spearhead Fort Worth’s economic development plan in her new position, emphasizing workforce development, small company growth, business recruiting and retention, and fostering a thriving, varied economy. She will collaborate closely with the nonprofit, privately funded Fort Worth Economic Development Partnership, which aims to draw in new companies to the area. To spearhead company recruitment initiatives, the economic development partnership was established in 2023 as a distinct organization from the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce.

I’m thrilled to start working with the Economic Development Partnership and others to support company expansion, draw in new investment to Fort Worth, and create economic vitality. I’m looking forward to joining the exceptional team at the city of Fort Worth,” Rogers said. Fort Worth already has a strong history of fostering wise growth and economic development, and I’m prepared to get started to continue this important work.

According to the news announcement, Rogers, who served as the city of Denton’s economic development director, created creative incentive programs, created a strategic plan for economic development, and fortified public-private relationships.

Rogers has also worked for the Bloomington Economic Development Corp. in Indiana and the city of Dickinson, Texas.

She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Texas A&M University and a master’s degree in public affairs from Indiana University’s Paul H. O. Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs. She participates actively in both the Texas City Management Association and the International City/County Management Association.
