During his four seasons in New England, Stephon Gilmore made a significant impact.
During that time in Foxborough, the standout cornerback was selected to two All-Pro teams, won NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2019, and was instrumental in the New England Super Bowl victory in 2018.
However, despite all of his output on the field, Gilmore apparently could not escape Bill Belichick’s fury during filming.
Gilmore claimed that Belichick did not hold back during one video breakdown following his signing with the team in 2017 during a recent interview on James White’s Money Down program.
(Belichick) did me no good. Gilmore claimed, “One day, he killed me.” When I first arrived, that is. They pressed me against a receiver. The way was a handful. We were all on the same page, and I was chosen. I was chosen. In the following meeting, he killed me. How he accomplished it nearly brought me to tears. I will not tell you lies. I thought, “Dude,” and walked to the restroom.
Gilmore noted that, in spite of Belichick’s direct remarks, he benefited from the tough love while he was with the Patriots and went on to become one of the best corners in the league.
Gilmore continued, “I’ll tell you one thing: I never got picked again after that (expletive).”
It was essential in helping New England become a two-decade dynasty, despite Belichick’s strict methods as head coach.
We were really attentive and well-prepared on Saturday night. Speaking on FS1 in June 2024, Tom Brady described the Patriots’ preparation work under Belichick as “the opposite of tight.”Because we knew the test answers, we were always at ease.
