First responders were kept busy over the past 24 hours as fireworks-related incidents sparked fires and injuries across the region.
In Bismarck, a trailer filled with fireworks caught fire late Friday night at the intersection of 71st Street and State Street. According to the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office, fireworks were being set off in the area shortly after 10:30 p.m., when one tipped over and struck a tent housing the firework trailer.
Quick thinking by the trailer’s owner likely prevented a more dangerous situation. The owner jumped into the semi’s cab and managed to pull the trailer away from the tent and larger fireworks. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in the incident.
Meanwhile, in southeast Dickinson, a garage sustained significant damage, and one person was injured after a firework ignited a blaze at a home on 2nd Avenue Southeast around 10 p.m. Friday night. The Dickinson Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire, but the injured individual had to be transported to the hospital. Three dogs were found inside the home but were unharmed.
The Dickinson Fire Department reminded residents that fireworks are illegal within city limits and warned of the dangers they pose, as highlighted by this incident.
In Ward County, the Sheriff’s Office reported responding to 12 fire calls involving fireworks within the last 24 hours. Fortunately, those incidents resulted in only minimal damage.
Authorities across the region continue to urge the public to use caution with fireworks and to adhere to local laws to prevent injuries and property damage during the holiday period.
