According to authorities, a big fire on Thursday night severely damaged a sports complex in Hingham.
According to David Levenson, deputy fire chief of operations, Hingham firefighters responded to a smoke detector activation at the South Shore Sports Complex at approximately 11 p.m. and promptly upgraded it to a two-alarm fire upon observing the intense smoke and flames across the roof.
Firefighters made sure no one was inside the building before trying to put out the fire, however the complex was secured before staff arrived. According to Levenson, the fire rapidly spread to four alarms and there was a water supply problem that needed more assistance.
For six hours, the team, which included over fifty firefighters from ten different villages, alternated between battling the fire inside and outside the structure, according to Levenson.
The second-floor office space, kitchen, and lounge were damaged when a significant section of the roof fell. The remainder of the building was severely damaged by smoke.
According to Levenson, the origin of the fire is still unknown, and the dangerous circumstances of the building preclude conducting an inquiry. There were no reported injuries.
