The direct criticism of the Red Sox from Ken Rosenthal: Craig Breslow, the chief baseball officer for the Red Sox, came under fire on a number of fronts after failing to make any major additions before Thursday’s MLB trade deadline.
Veteran MLB reporter and insider Ken Rosenthal offered one of the more blunt criticisms. Rosenthal voiced his opinions about the cautious Red Sox front office during a recent episode of Foul Territory.
Rosenthal described the Red Sox’s trade deadline performance as a “epic failure.” Both this and Craig Breslow’s failure last year came off as enormous failures.
Rosenthal brushed aside any idea that Breslow and the Red Sox were ever close to a deal while circling through the players Boston was supposed to be interested in, including Twins starter Joe Ryan.
According to what I gather, he stated that any discussions with the Twins were at best weak. They didn’t attack them with much force. A lot of teams, like the Red Sox, employ modeling to determine the greatest values. It’s all about efficiency, getting the best price, and this, that, and the other. However, you must shoot at some time.
He criticized the starting pitcher that the Red Sox did deal for, pointing out that Dustin May has not been a very good Dodgers starter and that the team neglected to address first base.
“My goodness,” he added, “they needed more.”
According to Rosenthal, this is a team that is growing. They may claim that our young men will be significantly better the next year. Indeed, but the Orioles said that a year ago. This sport, like all others, has no guarantees.
In his conclusion, he made reference to the broader disappointment of the fan base.
I don’t understand the Red Sox. Many folks in Boston will be wondering what the hell they did, and I don’t understand it either.
“At some point, you’ve got to fire away.”@Ken_Rosenthal.pic.twitter.com/4MKbDh5TXK calls the Red Sox’s failure to complete the necessary tasks by the trade deadline a catastrophic failure.
Schedules and scores:
Tonight at 7:10 p.m., the Red Sox kick off a three-game series against the Astros at Fenway Park.
