BROOKLYN, NY — A 5-year-old boy is recovering after a terrifying fall from a fifth-story window at a Brooklyn housing complex on Wednesday, law enforcement sources said.
According to the NYPD, officers responded around noon to a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) building along Avenue V in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood after receiving reports of a child falling from a window.
The boy, who lives in the apartment with his mother and two older brothers, ages 12 and 13, was found conscious and alert despite sustaining serious injuries. Police said he suffered head trauma and a broken arm in the fall.
Emergency responders quickly transported the child to Maimonides Medical Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
Neighbors Describe the Shocking Scene
Neighbors told ABC 7 that the boy’s older brothers ran to alert their mother immediately after the fall. One building resident recalled that a visiting nurse happened to come upon the scene and checked on the child.
“When she went to look at him he seemed to be talking,” the resident said, recounting what the nurse had told her.
“He seemed to not understand what was going on but was talking, he was alive and he was verbal — so that’s a good sign.”
Another neighbor said the child was able to speak with his mother shortly after the fall and appeared to be responsive.
“When I found out about it my heart hurt,” the resident added. “My mom sometimes watches them when their mom goes to work.”
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not said how the child managed to fall from the window, and the circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation. Police confirmed that the probe is ongoing.
Officials have not released the boy’s identity, and no charges have been filed as of Thursday morning.
