Rafael Devers will be facing the Red Sox. The Red Sox will start a three-game series against the Giants in San Francisco on Friday night. Rafael Devers, a former Boston franchise player, will be waiting for them in the opposition dugout.
Less than a week ago, 28-year-old Devers was moved to the Giants in a blockbuster deal that was widely regarded as unexpected, particularly considering the timing (more than a month before the trade deadline). Timing will be the main topic of discussion around Devers once more because he will be playing his old team very soon after the deal.
In the lead-up to Friday’s series start, Boston players and manager Alex Cora shared their opinions on having to play against their old comrade so soon after the trade.
According to Ian Browne of MLB.com, shortstop Trevor Story stated that it will be a little strange to see him wearing those colors because he has been a significant part of this team for such a long period. He will undoubtedly tell you the same thing once the game begins: it’s all about winning. Our goal is to win for our team, and his is to win for his.
It’s all about competition when the first pitch is thrown, Story concluded.
Despite acknowledging the obvious reality, Cora clarified that Boston and Devers are both turning the page.
“It’s so recent,” he acknowledged. He will do all in his power to kick our ass, and we will do everything in our power to reciprocate. That is the matter at hand. The only issue is that it will seem weird because it is so recent. However, I believe that each team has a task to complete. Let’s attempt to win the game.
Despite the trade intrigue and the consequences from the unexpected decision to let go of Devers, Boston has really been playing well lately. The Red Sox have reduced the Yankees’ American League East lead to five games after winning seven of their past eight games.
Brayan Bello, the starting pitcher, summed up the atmosphere by saying that, despite how unexpected the situation surrounding Devers may be, the goal is still to continue the strong run.
Bello remarked of Devers, “Obviously, I didn’t expect to face him at all, but I’ll just be really happy to see him.” However, the strategy is to attack him and attempt to free him.
