What NFL experts are saying about the possibility of a blockbuster Patriots trade

The potential for a Patriots trade: Eliot Wolf, the team’s executive vice president of player personnel, freely acknowledged to reporters before Monday’s training camp practice that the team would look to trade a top draft pick in order to acquire more talent before the 2025 season begins.

Wolf clarified that they were simply acting in the team’s best interests. We would think about doing that if there is a player out there that we believe can assist us and it costs [a high draft pick].

As the full effects of what Wolf had stated started to sink in, this naturally sent shockwaves across New England. For Patriots supporters thinking that this would mean the acquisition of prominent holdouts like Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin or Bengals defensive tackle Trey Hendrickson, the reality may be a touch disheartening.

A Patriots deal may not be imminent, according to a number of NFL reporters.

Like any teams, the Patriots are always searching for ways to make their roster better, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russinino on Tuesday morning.

However, based on the discussions I’ve been having, I don’t think New England is close to signing any of the NFL’s dissatisfied stars right now, Russini continued.

Similar reporting was reflected by other league insiders.

According to a league source as of Monday, the New England Patriots believe the price to sign Bengals standout rusher Trey Hendrickson is too high, Josina Anderson wrote. The team is still keeping an eye on the Hendrickson market as part of their due diligence.

Nearer to home, Andrew Callahan of The Boston Herald shared the doubts on the possibility of an impending agreement.

This seemed to me to be Eliot just saying, “Yeah, we would consider anything,” but what exactly was on the table?Hesaid on Monday night on NBC Sports Boston.

To put it simply, Patriots writer Tom Curran said, “It’s kind of posturing.” All 31 of the other teams are being told, “Hey, if you have someone you want to move, you could move them.” We will not select almost anyone in the first round, but if you were to hypothetically say that we would send you Player X, who is ranked in the top three, we would.

However, Curran responded to Callahan by saying, “I think it’s interesting to show not so much that [the Patriots] are in on everybody; I don’t think it’s false in that regard, but that there is an urgency that they want to convey that you and I have talked about for years was absent.”

Before the Week 1 kickoff against the Raiders on September 7, the Patriots have a couple more weeks of preseason left to finalize their roster.

Fun fact: Ron, Eliot Wolf’s father, was the Packers’ longtime general manager. The elder Wolf acquired a future three-time MVP in exchange for a first-round choice early in his Green Bay stint. That player was who?

(The response is at the bottom.)

He would go on to start 253 straight games for the Packers, as a hint.

Schedules and scores:

On Monday, the Red Sox suffered a 6-3 loss to the Orioles. First pitch for the rematch between the two teams is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. today at Fenway Park.

On Thursday at 8 p.m., the Patriots are getting ready for their last preseason game against the Giants.

A throwback to ESPN: For the first time in 22 years, Rich Eisen took over as host of SportsCenter on Monday night. The opening looked (and sounded) classic. Eisen concluded by paying a heartfelt homage to the late Stuart Scott, his longtime co-anchor.

Goalie goal: Alyssa Naeher, a native of Connecticut, scored an uncommon goal during Monday’s 3–3 draw between the Chicago Stars and the Seattle Reign.

Today: The Red Sox defeated the Angels 12–11 in a wild game in 1967. Carl Yastrzemski hit a home run and two RBIs while going 4-for-5. The Red Sox won nine of ten games in mid-August, and the win coincided with a Boston surge in the standings.

Daily highlight: In the Bengals’ preseason game against Washington, backup wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley had a fantastic night, making multiple great catches, including two spectacular touchdown receptions.
