One of the best bars in America is in Boston, according to USA Today

Cocktail Club Carrie NationAccording to USA Today journalists, one of the top bars in the country is located in Beacon Hill.

There are plenty of dive bars, breweries, and fancy cocktail experiences in Arizona, South Carolina, and other places thanks to this jazz venue and watering hole with a 1920s theme. The only New England pub to be included was Carrie Nation.

Journalists from the USA Today Network, including area food reporter Joanna Tzouvelis of Wicked Local, selected the 29 bars that made the list. Numerous bars can be found in towns or locations where Gannett, a mass media business, has a print or digital presence.

Including its ironic namesake, American temperance activist Carrie Nation, the restaurant journalist covered Carrie Nation for USA Today’s Best Bars in America list.

Tzouvelis described a fierce woman around 1900 who would storm into saloons with a hatchet, breaking liquor bottles and bar fixtures because she was so against people consuming alcohol. With her name displayed at the Carrie Nation Cocktail Club, this iconic woman’s spirit lives on even though she is no longer with us.

The 2013 opening of The Beacon Hillbar, with its Victorian décor and second bar housed in a secret speakeasy, harkens back to the Prohibition era. Classics like the espresso martini, the Vesper cocktail, grilled oysters, and a 24-ounce steak to share are all on the menu.
