SWAT Raid in DeLand Uncovers Dogfighting Operation; 29 Dogs Rescued with 1 Arrest

A SWAT team conducted a pre-dawn raid on a property in DeLand, Florida, rescuing 29 dogs believed to have been used in an illegal dogfighting operation, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

The raid occurred at approximately 4:49 a.m. on Wednesday at a residence located at 31938 3rd Avenue. Investigators discovered dogs ranging from puppies to elderly animals, many of them chained and confined to makeshift kennels.

Dogs Found in Poor Conditions

The sheriff’s office reported that most of the animals showed signs of injury:

  • All 29 dogs were chained or housed in cramped, makeshift kennels.
  • Many showed scarring in various stages of healing, consistent with dogfighting injuries.
  • Dogs lacked clean drinking water and adequate shelter from outdoor elements.
  • Kennels were restrictive, preventing free movement.

The conditions prompted immediate action from authorities and animal control teams.

Arrest and Charges

The investigation led to the arrest of 48-year-old Jason Bigger, who now faces multiple charges, including:

  • 29 counts of animal cruelty
  • 29 counts of baiting and fighting animals
  • Possession of marijuana
  • Tampering with evidence

Deputies also reported the discovery of narcotics at the scene during the execution of the search warrant.

Dogs Safe and Recovering

All 29 rescued dogs were taken to the Lake County Animal Shelter for care and evaluation. Despite the traumatic environment they were rescued from, animal services staff reported that the dogs are showing remarkable resilience.

“We were pleasantly surprised,” said Whitney Boylston, a spokesperson for the Office of Animal Services. “Temperament-wise, we had a lot of tail wags and kisses. The dogs were very welcoming of affection.”

So far, the dogs have:

  • Been treated for various medical conditions
  • Received vaccinations, deworming, and flea treatments
  • Shown positive behavioral responses to shelter staff

Not Available for Adoption Yet

Due to the ongoing criminal investigation, the rescued dogs are not currently available for adoption or fostering. However, Boylston encouraged the public to consider adopting one of the 171 other dogs currently at the shelter.

“This situation really highlights the need for people to adopt. We have so many dogs still in need of a home,” she added.

Authorities have not released further details about the investigation but confirmed that it remains active.
