Revolution melt in second half as winless streak stretches to seven with loss at Red Bulls

As the

near the All-Star break, their margin for error to get back into the playoff picture is getting thinner by the day.

New England saw a two-goal halftime lead evaporate in the heat and humidity of Sports Illustrated Stadium in a 5-3 loss to the New York Red Bulls in Harrison, N.J. The five goals conceded were a season high for New England.

The Revolution (6-9-7, 25 points) are winless in their last seven games (0-5-2) as the Red Bulls (9-8-6, 33 points) snapped a five-game winless run of their own and put some breathing space between themselves and those on the wrong side of the playoff bubble.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Emil Forsberg each scored twice for New York.

Daniel Edelman put the Red Bulls on the board in the 56th minute with a shot from outside the box that took a deflection off Revolution defender Keegan Hughes in the middle of the box and past a helpless Aljaz Ivacic.

Revolution defender Brayan Ceballos had to come off injured in the 66th minute and was replaced by Wyatt Omsberg.

Choupo-Moting and Forsberg each got their first of the game two minutes apart for a 3-2 lead in the 72nd minute, the go-ahead goal coming on a beautiful turn and left-footed strike from the top of the box.

They followed suit a little later. Choupo-Moting made it 4-2 as he made a run into the middle of the box to receive a pass from Ronald Donkor in the 83rd minute, and Forsberg converted a penalty kick five minutes later.

It was a great start for the Revolution, who went ahead after just five minutes on a goal from Leo Campana on a quick counterattack down the left side. They tacked on a second in the 30th minute when Luca Langoni‘s shot from just outside the 6-yard box struck the post, but deflected off Red Bulls defender Kyle Duncan and into the net.

New York had a 58-42 edge in possession and 21-13 advantage in shots.

Campana added a second of the game in stoppage time, giving him four goals on the season. The Ecuadorian broke a seven-game goalless spell, scoring for the first time since May 3.

The Revolution host Orlando City on Saturday night in the final game before the All-Star break. With 12 matches remaining, New England stands seven points behind ninth-place Charlotte FC for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
