5 Dead after 18-Wheeler Driver allegedly falls Asleep and caused Multi-Vehicle Crash on I-20

Kaufman County, TX — Five people lost their lives and several others were injured in a devastating multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 20 on June 28, 2025, after an 18-wheeler driver allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, triggering a chain-reaction wreck.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) has identified the deceased as:

  • Billy McKellar, 79, of Tyler
  • Zabar McKellar, 52, of Fort Worth
  • Krishaun McKellar, 45, of Fort Worth
  • Kason McKellar, 16, of Fort Worth
  • Nicole Gregory, 49, of Dallas

The crash occurred when eastbound traffic along I-20 was stopped due to a previous accident. According to DPS Sgt. Kyle Bradford, Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni, 27, of Kissimmee, Florida, was driving a 2025 Peterbilt 18-wheeler when he allegedly fell asleep behind the wheel.

His semi crashed into the rear of the McKellar family’s 2018 Ford F-150, which was then pushed into another 18-wheeler from Monroe, Louisiana, triggering a multi-vehicle pileup involving additional commercial trucks and passenger vehicles.

The McKellar family members were pronounced dead at the scene. One occupant of their vehicle was airlifted to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Companioni’s semi jackknifed and slid into the left lane, striking Nicole Gregory’s 2021 Jeep Compass, which was pushed into a 2013 Ford Mustang. Gregory was airlifted but pronounced deceased upon arrival at the hospital. The Mustang’s driver suffered minor injuries, while its passenger was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

A Honda Civic in the left lane was hit by debris but its two occupants from Waxahachie were unharmed.

Alexis Osmani Gonzalez-Companioni has been arrested and charged with:

  • Five counts of manslaughter
  • One count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon

He remains in the Kaufman County Jail as the investigation continues.
