Woman Killed, 6-Year-Old Injured in Hayward Crosswalk Crash

Hayward, California – A woman was killed and a young child injured Saturday evening after they were struck by a vehicle while walking in a marked crosswalk, police said.

The collision happened just before 6:30 p.m. near West Tennyson Road and Baldwin Street, according to the Hayward Police Department.

Authorities said a 59-year-old woman and a 6-year-old boy were crossing the street when a vehicle hit them.

Woman pronounced dead at hospital

Both victims were transported to a local hospital following the crash. Police said the woman was later pronounced dead, while the child suffered facial fractures but is expected to survive.

Officials have not released the woman’s identity pending notification of next of kin and formal identification by the coroner’s office. The boy’s name is also being withheld because he is a juvenile.

Driver remained at scene

Police said the driver, identified only as a 60-year-old Hayward resident, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

“The driver’s identity is not being released at this time,” Hayward police said.

Investigators added that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash.

Investigation ongoing

Authorities have not yet provided additional details about what may have led to the collision, including whether speed or visibility played a role.

The crash remains under investigation as police continue to gather evidence and review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
