Milwaukee, Wisconsin – A 26-year-old pharmacy student, Ariel Spillner, was shot and killed on November 4 in Milwaukee after what police described as a marijuana-induced episode of paranoia involving her close friend, Jamica Simone Mills.
According to reports from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, WMTV, and Fox 6 Milwaukee, Mills, 31, has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide and felony use of a dangerous weapon in connection with the killing. She is currently being held at the Milwaukee County Jail on a $150,000 bond, with her next court appearance set for November 17.
What Happened That Night
Authorities say that first responders arrived at a home around 9:40 p.m. on November 4, where they found Mills lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to her abdomen. Nearby, they discovered Spillner unresponsive; she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Court documents reveal that Spillner and Mills had been friends for about a year. That night, Spillner reportedly visited Mills’ home to groom her dogs. Afterward, the two smoked marijuana, which allegedly led to severe paranoia.
According to Mills’ statement to police, she believed Spillner made a sudden movement that appeared threatening — causing her to fire a handgun she kept in her bedroom. Mills told investigators she did not intend to kill her friend but acted out of fear.
A Family’s Heartbreak
Spillner’s devastated family described her as a “light to everyone who knew her” in a GoFundMe campaign established to help cover funeral costs.
“Ariel was a light to everyone who knew her — she had the most giving soul with the biggest heart,” the family wrote. “She loved deeply: her family, her friends, her dogs, and the simple joys of life.”
They remembered her as an outstanding athlete, loyal friend, and dedicated student at Concordia University, where she was pursuing a degree in pharmacy.
“Her compassion and energy touched everyone she met. She had such a bright future, and it is heartbreaking that it was ripped away from her and us,” the family added.
Legal Proceedings and Next Steps
Mills remains in custody as prosecutors continue to build their case. The Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office has confirmed that the charges include first-degree reckless homicide and use of a dangerous weapon — both carrying significant prison sentences if she is convicted.
She is expected to appear in court again on November 17, where additional evidence and testimony may be presented.
Community Reaction
The tragedy has sparked conversations about mental health, substance use, and gun safety, with community members expressing grief and disbelief online. Friends and fellow students at Concordia University have organized vigils and shared tributes celebrating Spillner’s kindness and generosity.
