MADISON, Wis. – A 26-year-old guy from Wisconsin got more than five years in federal prison for having a gun and ammunition while he was a convicted felon.
United States District Judge William Conley gave Damon Clark of Eau Claire a five-and-a-half-year prison term on Tuesday. He will then be released after three years of being closely watched. Clark pleaded yes to the felony charge on August 20 and was then given his sentence.
The event happened on January 1, 2024, when Eau Claire Police were called to a bar to reports of a fight with a gun pointed at someone. Clark was recognized as the person who did it by witnesses and video footage.
Clark ran away to a nearby parking lot when the cops arrived. That’s when they caught him and found a loaded Glock 19 with a 31-round magazine hidden under a car.
The gun had an illegal add-on on it called a machinegun conversion device, which turns a semiautomatic pistol into a fully automatic weapon that can fire about 50 rounds in four seconds. The Wisconsin State Crime Lab tested the gun and found Clark’s DNA on it.
Clark was officially not allowed to have guns or ammunition because he had been convicted of felonies in the past.
During Clark’s sentence, Judge Conley called his actions “disastrous,” emphasizing how dangerous it is to carry a loaded machine gun with an extended magazine outside of a busy bar.
Judge Conley stressed how bad the crime was, but he also said that Clark had never been to jail before and hoped that this sentence would be a turning point in his life.
