by Winter Haven, Florida—Police say a domestic dispute escalated into a stabbing Thursday morning, leaving one man hospitalized and another facing a serious felony charge.
According to the Winter Haven Police Department, officers responded to a home on Lucerne Loop Road shortly before 11 a.m. after receiving reports of a stabbing.
Victim Found With Chest Stab Wound
When officers arrived at the residence, they found a 38-year-old man suffering from a stab wound to his chest, police said. Officers immediately provided first aid until paramedics arrived.
The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to investigators.
“The victim was conscious and receiving medical care when officers arrived,” police said.
Suspect Identified at the Scene
Police identified the suspect as Adrian Abrams, 55, who was taken into custody following interviews with witnesses at the home.
According to investigators, Abrams initially told officers that he had been sleeping when the victim entered the room and began tackling and punching him, triggering a physical altercation. Abrams claimed he grabbed a knife at that point to defend himself.
Police Say Stabbing Happened After Initial Fight
Further questioning revealed additional details that led to Abrams’ arrest on a more serious charge.
Police said Abrams admitted that after the initial dispute, the victim left the house, and Abrams went into the kitchen.
“Abrams stated he retrieved a kitchen knife, followed the victim outside, and told him, ‘I’m gonna stab you,’ before stabbing him in the chest,” investigators said.
Authorities said those statements, combined with witness accounts and evidence at the scene, contradicted claims of self-defense.
Attempted Murder Charge Filed
Detectives arrested Abrams and booked him into jail on a charge of attempted second-degree murder.
Police did not release details about the relationship between the two men or what sparked the original argument, stating that the investigation remains ongoing.
Police Chief Praises Swift Response
Winter Haven Police Chief Vance Monroe commended officers and detectives for their quick response and handling of the situation.
“Our officers and detectives were able to quickly take control of the scene and ascertain a possible suspect,” Monroe said. “Their diligence and dedication resulted in the swift arrest of this suspect, who could have let cooler heads prevail, but chose otherwise.”
Investigation Continues
Authorities said no additional suspects are being sought at this time. Police continue to review evidence and witness statements as the case moves through the court system.
