Rochester, New York — Wegmans is recalling two varieties of its Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts due to the potential presence of salmonella, a bacteria that can cause serious foodborne illness, the grocery chain announced Tuesday.
The recalled products include:
- 34-ounce Family Pack – UPC 0-77890-42131-4, Lot Code DC 58041, Best By July 28, 2026 (found below the lid on the side of the tub)
- 11-ounce Bag – UPC 0-77890-42135-2, Lot Code DC 58171, Best By August 10, 2026 (printed on the bottom back of the bag)
Wegmans has not disclosed how many cases are affected or the specific states where the products were shipped. While no illnesses have been reported, customers are urged to return the recalled nuts for a full refund. The mix contains almonds, cashews, pistachios, and pecans.
Health Risks and Symptoms
Salmonella infections typically appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, with symptoms that may last four to seven days, according to the FDA. Symptoms include:
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Abdominal cramps
Children under five, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at greater risk for severe infections.
The CDC reports that salmonella is the second leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., causing approximately 1.35 million illnesses, 420 deaths, and 26,500 hospitalizations annually.
Recent Salmonella Outbreaks Highlight Risk
This recall follows other significant salmonella outbreaks in the U.S. earlier this year. In September, several home-delivery meal kits from Metabolic Meals were linked to a multi-state salmonella outbreak, leaving seven people hospitalized. Affected meals included:
- Four Cheese Tortellini with Pesto Sauce and Grilled Chicken
- Low Carb Chicken Teriyaki and Vegetables
- Black Garlic & Ranch Chicken Tenders with Roasted Vegetables
- Sliced Top Sirloin with Roasted Peanut Sauce and Summer Vegetables
Wegmans’ Ongoing Food Safety Precautions
Wegmans has a history of proactive recalls. Last month, the grocery chain issued a warning regarding Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese due to potential Listeria contamination, sold between November 14 and 25 in stores across Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.
Consumer Action Recommended
Shoppers who purchased the recalled Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund and avoid consuming the product.
