On Wednesday night, against Mariners righthander Logan Evans, Walpole’s Cam Schlittler will make his major league debut on the mound for the Yankees after being called up from Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Before being promoted, the 6-foot-6-inch right-hander pitched 53 innings at Double A Somerset with a 2.38 ERA and 64 strikeouts. The former Northeastern standout has a 2-1 record in five starts in Triple A, with a 3.80 ERA. In 23 innings pitched, he has given up 20 hits and 10 earned runs while striking out 35 and walking only nine.
Northeastern Global News also reports that Mike Glavine, the coach of the Huskies, will be at Yankee Stadium to witness Schlittler’s pregnancy.
Glavine told NGN, “As a coach, I can’t even begin to describe how proud and happy I am to see one of my former players make his MLB debut.” Years of perseverance, hard work, and dedication got him this. For him, his family, and our Northeastern program, it’s a very important moment. This kind of situation is why we coach. I’m quite pleased for him.
The Yankees scout Matt Hyde, who signed Schlittler following the 2022 MLB Draft, will be sitting with him, according to Glavine. Yankees captain Aaron Boone, who told the New York Post that Schlittler has been excellent, is another manager who is thrilled to see him.
He’s fascinating. Boone said that he had some excellent opportunities throughout spring training. We had the opportunity to see him frequently, and he truly impressed us. He came on quickly, performed well, and undoubtedly contributed.
The second former Husky on an MLB roster right now is Schlittler. in addition to righty Aaron Civale, who was traded from Milwaukee in June and is currently with the White Sox.
