Twin Cities Bracing for Higher-Than-Normal Mosquito Activity This Summer

In Minnesota, mosquitoes, which are a traditional yet vexing feature of the warm season in the state, might not be at the forefront of most people’s minds just yet. Experts, on the other hand, are already forecasting that they might be too difficult to escape this summer.

In its spring report for the Twin Cities, which was released last week, the Metropolitan Mosquito Control District confirmed that the first mosquito larvae of the year were discovered on March 17, which is “about when we would expect them to show up.” Additionally, discovery of deer ticks has already taken place.

According to the MMCD, the previous year was an unusual year for mosquitoes. The fact that mosquitoes were not unduly abundant (despite some hot patches) in spite of the fact that there was above-average rainfall leading up to the summer of last year is something that experts believe is connected to the drought that had occurred in the years prior. However, the EPA has since stated that common nuisance species, such as mosquitoes, may return in “big numbers” if the state experiences rainfall totals that are comparable for a second year in a row.

Cattail mosquitoes, a kind of mosquito that has been absent over the course of the last three years due to dry conditions, are anticipated to return in substantial numbers in the year 2025, according to a model that was produced by the entomology lab at MMCD.

In spite of everything, there is a glimmer of hope in the report. Due to the fact that cattail mosquitoes do not emerge in large numbers until the beginning of July, it is not anticipated that mosquitoes will be unduly numerous outside of the middle of summer.

According to MMCD, ticks are already active and are anticipated to be “normal” this season. It is also projected that they will be active.
