Turner Warnell Road widening project nears completion

Most of the work on the voter-approved Turner Warnell Road widening project between South Cooper Street and Matlock Road is complete, and the city hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 14 to mark the achievement, Arlington’s public works department announced.

Construction on the

widening project

began in April 2023, with the majority of work completed by June, and final elements are currently underway, the city said. Traffic signal installation at Cooper Street and Turner Warnell Road should be finished within the next month.

The project widened Turner Warnell Road between South Cooper Street and Matlock Road, from two lanes with a center turn lane to four lanes with a divided median, to increase capacity and mobility while reducing congestion, the city said.

Funds from the

2014 Street Bond

and Water and Sanitary Sewer renewals financed the project, supporting the City Council’s priorities to enhance regional mobility and champion great neighborhoods.

According to the city, here are key project improvements:

  • Widening Turner Warnell Road to a four-lane divided concrete roadway with two lanes in each direction.
  • Construction of a new two-lane concrete roadway with one lane in each direction on Grimes Street connecting Turner Warnell Road to Dan Gould Drive.
  • Construction of sidewalks on both sides of Turner Warnell Road.
  • Installation of an underground drainage system.
  • Installation of streetlights and communication conduits along the roadway.
  • Landscaping and irrigation.
  • Water and sanitary sewer improvements.
  • Traffic signal improvements with new signs and pavement markings.
