TikTok is preparing to launch a new app for U.S. users as it faces mounting pressure to sell its American operations or risk being banned nationwide.
Owned by China-based tech giant ByteDance, TikTok has until September 17, 2025, to divest its U.S. business following national security concerns raised by U.S. lawmakers and federal regulators. Officials have long feared that user data collected by TikTok could be accessed by the Chinese government—an accusation TikTok has consistently denied.
New App Launch Planned for September
According to a report from The Information, TikTok is planning to release a new U.S.-specific app on September 5, 2025. The existing app could potentially stop working by March 2026, prompting U.S. users to transition to the new platform to maintain access to the video-sharing service.
This new version of TikTok may include modifications designed to satisfy American regulatory and security concerns, particularly around data handling and corporate structure.
User Impact and Business Reach
TikTok remains one of the most widely used apps in the United States, with more than 170 million American users.
