Three Killed in Multiple Crashes Across Same South Carolina County, Police Report

That’s what the South Carolina Highway Patrol said: three accidents in the same Lowcountry county this weekend killed three people and sent one to the hospital.

They happened in Jasper County over 19 hours, according to Master Trooper Gary Miller.

Miller says the most recent accident happened just after midnight on Sunday.

Miller said the accident involving only one car happened on Purrysburg Road near Church Road.

Miller says that a 2013 Nissan Altima was going east on Purrysburg Road when it went off the right side of the road, hit a ditch, and then hit a tree.

Miller said the driver was the only person in the Nissan and died.

There was no word on whether or not the driver was wearing a seat belt, and it was not known what caused the Nissan to go off the road.

About five hours before, there was another accident in Jasper County that killed two people. It happened about a mile from the crash on Sunday.

Miller says that around 7 p.m. on Saturday, a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado was going south on Church Road when it hit a southbound bicycle near Seabreeze Drive, killing the bike rider.

Miller said that the Chevy driver, who was the only person in the pickup truck, was not hurt.

Miller said that the bike did not have any lights or markings on it.

Before the other crash at 5:15 a.m., it was dark outside. Miller said it was Saturday.

Miller says that the accident involving two cars happened on S.C. 462 near Bolan Hall Road.

Miller said that a 2002 Ford Ranger pickup was going west on S.C. 462 when it crossed the center line to the left and hit a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis that was going east.

Miller says the driver of the car died and the driver of the pickup was taken to a nearby hospital. More information about the condition of the driver who was still alive was not known.

Miller said that the bus drivers were the only ones in their cars, and that no one else was hurt.

It wasn’t clear if either driver had a seat belt on.

It was not known what led the Ford pickup to veer into oncoming traffic, but Miller said that the Highway Patrol was still looking into the crash.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office has not released the names of any of the people who died in the separate accidents.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety says that as of October 27, 2024, at least 806 people had died on the state’s roads. DPS said that 1,030 people died in crashes in South Carolina last year.

DPS records show that at least 17 people have died in crashes in Jasper County in 2024.
