The state Supreme Court did not hear an appeal from a guy who said the gun ban at the University of Michigan violates the Constitution. This means that the policy will stay in place.
A ruling made by the Michigan Court of Appeals in 2023 in favor of the university stands because of the 4-2 order on Friday.
It was asked by the U.S. Supreme Court to look into the university’s gun ban from 2001 after the court increased gun rights in 2022.
It’s not clear whether gun bans are effective as a way to keep people safe, the appeals court said. “However, because the university is a school, and thus a sensitive place, it is up to the policy-maker — the university in this case — to determine how to address that public safety concern.”
David Viviano and Brian Zahra, two of the most conservative justices on the Michigan Supreme Court, asked to take the case. People who were against it said the appeals court looked at it wrongly, which led to a “near total ban of firearms on a large section of Ann Arbor.”
