Some of us are determined to demolish what remains of the significance of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, while others are celebrating its passage. Donald Trump has completely dismantled the Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division, firing or resigning key employees. In order to prevent the Democrats from regaining control of the House of Representatives, the Republican-led Administration is redrawing electoral districts. Without this, we will be unable to impeach Trump or stop his embezzlement of federal funds that were diverted from their legislative intent in an attempt to abolish representative government.
We as a nation are in a crisis that will require our full participation, especially when one considers our own waning interest in voting despite the fact that those who came before us gave their lives to defend our right to vote. The ballot is the sole way to exert that participation.
Remember that the people who are destroying our country and way of life are not as many as the majority of us, yet they still cast ballots and make plans for the next election. They are aware that far too many people still don’t care enough to cast a ballot. Therefore, we should not become overly enthusiastic about the assaults on voting rights without considering our own personal contributions. No matter where they reside, we need to get in touch with our friends and family and urge them to vote with us against this insanity. Let’s register, check out the opposition to these Republican candidates, and cast our ballots. We rely on it for our survival.
